The meaning of life:
Der Sinn des Lebens:

Sein-oder-nicht-sein

To be or not to be.

Simply to be.
Einfach da zu sein.
(To live)
(Zu leben.)

[ ->   Wilhelm's Erkenntnis bis November 2011   ]
Gefunden im Dezember 2011 in Wappeltsham 5, Eberschwang:

Der einzige Sinn unseres Lebens ist es, zu sein, was wir sind, und zu werden, was uns zu werden gegeben ist. (Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson)

[ -> -> ->   So daneben lag der Wilhelm da gar nicht :-)   <- <- <- ]

In another language:

#include
<iostream>
#include <time.h>

using namespace std;

#define COINCIDENCE (rand()%4) // fate/kismet/destiny; random number: 0,1,2 or 3

enum to_be_or_not_to_be
{
    life,
    suicide,
    terminal_illness,
    death
};

void main (void)
{
    time_t t;
    time(&t);
    srand((unsigned int)t); /* initialise random number generator */

     cout << endl << "To be, or not to be:" << endl;
    cout <<
"====================" << endl;

    switch ( int to_be_or_not_to_be = COINCIDENCE )

  {
        case life: cout << "Live: " << endl;
                   break
;

   case suicide: cout << "Suicide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r_ubcUd-gE" << endl;

break;

   case terminal_illness: cout << "Terminal illness: " << endl;
                               cout <<
"Your diagnosis is terminal? " << endl;
                               cout <<
"You don't know what the future holds! " << endl;
                               cout <<
"Your job is to take care of yourself, " << endl;
                               cout <<
"to try and have the best life you can," << endl;
                               cout <<
"for as long as you can.               " << endl;
                               cout <<
"Live each day doing what feels right. " << endl;

   break;

case death: cout << "Death: " << endl;
                 cout <<
"From the stars we came ...        " << endl;
                 cout <<
"... and to the stars we return,   " << endl;
                 cout <<
"from now until the end of time.   " << endl;

  break;

  }
}

Life without death would lose its value.
It gives a finite scope for our activities, it gives a sense that we cannot live for ourselves alone.
We have to live for what comes after us.
